Orienteering at Stocks Wood

We practiced our orienteering skills and using 6 figure grid references at Stocks Wood, it was great fun.

Using compasses 

Derwentwater have enjoyed learning how to use a compass and find out where North is, once they know where north is they can deduce where south, east and west are. 

Updating the orienteering map 

Our orienteering map was a little outdated and didn’t show all out new play equipment, sheds and picnic tables so Derwentwater had a go at updating it, they realised how hard it is to show features in the correct location, size and shape. It took quite a few tries.

Orienteering

Derwentwater have enjoyed our current Geography topic of Orienteering coinciding with the sunny weather, they’ve been learning how to orientate their map and find the controls hidden around the school grounds.  

4 and 6 figure grid references

We practiced our map skills and looked at 4 and 6 figure grid references in Derwentwater, these skills helped us locate specific places on our maps. We fun practicing our skills with a game of battleships 😊

Ordnance Survey Maps

Derwentwater enjoyed developing their map reading skills looking for places they knew on ordnance survey maps of our area. We also looked at contour lines and interpreted how steep different landscapes around The Lakes District can be.
