Winter
Winter walk
Jack Frost has been out last night and left our school playground looking white and crisp this morning! Buttermere class wrapped up warmly and went outside to explore the effects of cold frost and ice on the school grounds. The children stood quietly listening for the signs of birds tweeting, but they were nowhere to be heard. We discussed why they might not be flying around and how they might be in their nests keeping warm out of the cold. The children then examined the frost covered bark and were excited to see the patterns the frost left on them. We then went for a walk on the grass and listened to the crunch of the grass beneath our feet.
On the way back into school one of the children noticed that the water in our outdoor tuff tray had frozen over. When inspecting the life, we discussed how water freezes when it’s cold and turns into ice and that it goes from being a liquid to a solid. I then asked the children what they think happens to the ice when it gets hot and they told me that it melts and goes back to water.
