Maryport Inshore Rescue Assembly
Fri 08 Mar 2024This morning we had a visit from Julian from Maryport Inshore Rescue who spoke to us about the important role they have and how they keep us safe. They also spoke to us about we can prevent ourselves from getting in to danger.
He showed us photographs of the lifeboats that are stationed at Maryport and Silloth. He then spoke to us about all the kit then need to wear to keep them safe and warm during a rescue.
Sea Rescue
First they showed us there insulating base layer to keep them warm because it’s cold in the water. The suit was similar to the suits our current KS2 classes wore when ghyll scrambling last year.
Mrs Jackson tried on the suit with steel toe caps which would be their next layer.
The final layer would be their life jacket to keep them afloat. Their life jacket also enables them to carry lots of safety equipment such as a flare to warn people someone in trouble and a PLB which shows their exact location if they are ever in trouble. A PLB is especially important when they are preforming rescue missions at night as if they get in to trouble the darkness would make it especially difficult to see.
The lifeboat team also wear helmets. Julian explained that the reason their helmets are yellow is because the froth on a rough sea is white so the yellow helmet provides a contrast and makes it easier for them to be seen. Some helmets have built in radios so they can communicate with other members of the rescue team.
Swift Water Kit
The kit used for river or flood searches is slightly different due to the speed of the water. These kits are designed to provide an even quicker response.
He spoke about how when they arrive on a rescue mission there will be the leader, the team and the casualty. He said that the leader is the most important person, then the team and then the casualty. This is due to the fact that if the leader or team get in to trouble then there won’t be anyone left to rescue the original causality.
The biggest difference with the suits is that the boots are detachable on the swift water suit just in case their feet get trapped by debris.
Again they carry lots of kit in their life jacket such as a tow rope, a knife to cut any ties, and a radio for communication with the rest of the team. The life jacket also has a ‘cow tail’. They use the cow tail to secure themselves to a rope held by the team on land. This is to keep the team members safe if they have to enter the water.
Rescue
Julian demonstrated lots of different ways that the team would save a causality. He told us that they avoid entering the water whenever possible as entering the water endangers themselves.

Saint Valentine
Wed 07 Feb 2024This morning we enjoyed a super assembly lead by Lesley. We started with a quiz all about Saint Valentine and found out that he used to live in Italy. We heard about how he became a Saint and how Valentine’s Day is celebrated today.
It was fantastic for the children to hear about the history of Saint Valentine rather than just associating the celebration with presents.

Food bank assembly - Thankfulness
Mon 22 Jan 2024In this morning assembly, Stuart from Cumbria food bank spoke to our pupils about thankfulness.
We started the assembly by thinking about what we should be thankful for. Our pupils had lots of ideas and it was wonderful to hear them not only mention celebrations but also mention food, family and friends. Staying positive will help to add colour when we experience dark times.
Stuart then shared a story with us about 10 people who were cured of leprosy. Only one who said thank you.
Stuart also spoke about how even when we have negative experiences in life, we should stay thankful for all the positive things we have in life.
The pupils then gave Timmy the tin of tuna some advise. His friend Toby was unwell and feeling sad, this in turn was making Timmy sad. We decided it’d be a good idea to play the thankful game and think about all the positive things he could be thankful for. Stuart also linked this to the foodbank and how people who visit are thankful to the volunteers and for the donations.

Saint Kentigern Assembly
Wed 10 Jan 2024Today’s assembly was all about Saint Kentigern who is the Patron Saint of Glasgow.
We found out that our local church in Aspatria is named about Saint Kentigern because Saint Kentigern travelled to Cumbria and will have passed through Aspatria on his travels.
Saint Kentigern links all the way back to King Arthur and Prince Owain who was the Prince of Cumbria. Prince Owain travelled to Scotland and fell in love with a princess. They gave birth to a baby boy who went on to become Saint Kentigern.
We learnt that the princesses father was not happy with his daughter and he was so angry that he actually tried to kill her. He pushed her off a hill in Scotland but she survived, he then sent her out in a corniche on the sea but once again he survived. They believe that God saved the princess.
The first miracle preformed by Saint Kentigern was when he was a little boy. He was blamed for the death of a little robin. He held the robin in his hands and prayed for him to come back to life and it did!
There is the remained of the cross from 1000years ago at the back of the Church in Cumbria. This cross is where Saint Kentigern will have stood when he spoke to the residents of Aspatria all those years ago.

Online Safety Talk - Cumbria Constabulary
Wed 29 Nov 2023Our local PCSO, Pete, spoke to all our classes about online safety.
He spoke to our KS2 classes about the dangers of speaking to people online. He gave the example of a person who superimposed a photograph of a teen on to images in order to fool a teenager to meet them. When the teen went to meet this person they were faced with a 50 year old man, as opposed to their teenage friend who they thought they were meeting.
He highlighted the fact that they were unlikely to speak to people they do not know outside, so why would it be ok to speak to people they don’t know online.
We also spoke about age limits and that these are to help protect people from being exposed to something that is inappropriate or could make us worried. As well as road safety.
The Kidsafe rules of speaking to a trusted adult were reinforced during this session.

Saint Andrew Assembly
Wed 29 Nov 2023Our local Vicar visited our school to talk about Saint Andrew, whose celebration day is tomorrow, 30th November.
We found out that Saint Andrew was a fisherman who was helped by Jesus when they were struggling to gather food. After asking for help from Jesus, their empty nets started to overflow with fish. This was one of Jesus’ first miracles. After this many of the fishermen decided to become disciples and follow Jesus.
We also spoke about how Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice of death to help the people of the world.
After the resurrection, Saint Andrew travelled around the world to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and help people. We spoke about the 3000 mile journey he did.
The King of Scotland once seen Saint Andrew in a dream when he was worrying about a battle who reassured him that he would win. The King then awoke to see the cross of Saint Andrew in the sky. This is why the Scotland flag contains the cross and Saint Andrew and why Saint Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland.

Food Bank Assembly
Mon 27 Nov 2023Stuart from the food bank came in to school today. He brought along his friend
Norman, his rabbit. They were talking to us about friendships.
Stuart challenged two of the pupils to eat smarties using a very long spoon. The pupils found that this was impossible, however they could both enjoy the smarties if they fed them to each other!
Stuart also told the children about the biblical story where a man who was unable to walk was carried by his friends to be healed by Jesus. This was only possible with the help of his friends.
Stuart and his friend Timmy the tin of tuna then explained how they help people at the food bank.
